The subject of Health Education focuses on prevention and resilience and covers areas of prime importance to adolescents living in a rapidly changing world. Every Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 student participates in this learning area. The underlying principle of this subject is to produce well-informed young people who can make considered decisions to ensure their good health physically, mentally, emotionally and socially, now and in the future.
Physical Education is another important aspect of a student’s well-being. All students have access to the Leeming Recreation Centre facilities as part of the school curriculum. The activities offered are designed to improve skills levels, increase physical activity and to assist in the development of interpersonal skills and general health. Research has shown that success in these areas can impact positively on a student’s achievement in all learning areas.
In addition to the compulsory General Physical Education classes, students in Years 8-10 also have the option of selecting electives in a range of subjects including soccer, netball, AFL, golf, racket sports, fitness and Outdoor Education. Outdoor Education provides experimental learning through a unique combination of challenging activities in a variety of settings. Activities include canoeing, roping, camp craft, snorkeling, indoor rock climbing, bush-walking, swimming, orienteering, mountain biking and sailing.
In Years 11 and 12 students have the opportunity to select:
- Physical Education Studies ATAR and General
- General Health Studies
- Certificate II Sport Coaching
- Certificate II Outdoor Recreation
Students in Years 7-10 study Health Education which covers topics related to sexual health, growth and development, drug education, wellness, safety and lifestyle choices. Each topic is designed to assist the individual in making informed and healthy lifelong decisions.
All students are also provided with the opportunity to participate in inter-school competition through one day and after school competitions. Leeming regularly enters Athletics, Cross Country, Swimming, Hockey, AFL Football, Squash, Basketball and Soccer competitions to name a few. The emphasis of the Health and Physical Learning area is on sportsmanship, participation and teamwork, encouraging all of our students to become lifelong active individuals.
