Library

Welcome to the Library
Our bright spacious library houses a vast up-to-date collection of resources ranging from the traditional books and periodicals to CD-ROMs and internet access.

Students from all years use the library’s facilities in a variety of situations – as part of a class, in a small group working independently or working on an individual basis.

The main ethos of the Library is to develop lifelong independent learners who are self-motivated and confident in their approach.
Teacher Librarians work collaboratively with teachers preparing for topics to be studied. New resources are purchased on this basis and also on teacher recommendations

Opening Hours

Literature Promotion
The Library supports Literature Outcomes through literature promotion to all students from year 8-12.

Year 8 students participate in a literature program Reading for Life. With the introduction of computers, video games, television etc, recreational reading has become a lot less popular. Reading for Life introduces students to a wide variety of novels and encourages reading for enjoyment

Displays and the promotion of resources and student work. The Library has several display areas which are used to promote resources that are supportive of the curriculums offered throughout the school. Recreational resources are also promoted regularly.

Student work is always very popular when displayed in the Library - ranging from written assignments from all subjects, posters promoting Travel and Tourism, Art from all years to furniture from woodwork.

New resources are displayed on a weekly basis to allow staff and students to become aware of and borrow new purchases.

Information Process
All year 8 students participate in orientation sessions at the beginning of term one with a general introduction to the Library procedures, resources and Information Process.

This year, formal lessons on the Information Process are being taught to all Year 8 students through their S & E class.
All students then learn Information Skills at the point of need with the Teacher Librarians who work collaboratively with subject teachers. Skills that are reinforced cross curricular include various research skills, skimming and scanning, note making techniques, writing bibliographies. These strategies are all supportive of the Curriculum Framework.

There are several different strategy sheets available at the Circulation Desk for students to use. All students are familiar with these frameworks and use them at the relevant time.

The majority of classes that use the Library are given an introduction by a Teacher Librarian to the topic they are researching - brainstorming with the students how to best retrieve relevant information.

Technology in the Library
The Library uses the automation system FILMS (Functional Integrated Library Management System). The Library Information Technology corner consists of 16 computers for student use (5 DVD's, a scanner and 1 CD burner). The computers are all standardised with the rest of the school eg - Office 97, Publisher 98, Internet Explorer etc and are all connected to a printer.
Staff members book the Library Information Technology area plus students are able to book a computer for individual work. The class size bookings have increased with the larger number of computers (16) available.

Leeming SHS Acceptable Use Agreement – Internet & Computers
All students are given an Agreement at the commencement of Year 8 or when new to the school. They then take the Agreement home to discuss with their parents. The Agreement encourages students to take responsibility for their behaviour when accessing the Internet & Computers at Leeming SHS. They need to have read and signed, along with their parents, an Agreement before logging on a school computer. Example of Agreement – Link
