Academic programs

The school expects students and their parents to have a strong commitment to the successful completion of school education.

Students are expected to:

  • Approach school and study with a positive attitude
  • Devote the necessary time and energy to their studies
  • Develop effective and efficient study practices
  • Participate actively in class work.

The school is proud of students who have gained outstanding results in Year 12 and who have subsequently succeeded in their studies and careers.

Leeming Senior High School students are expected to succeed academically, in an environment conducive to learning. Student outcomes are central to student learning and the Leeming Senior High School curriculum is being built around the Curriculum Framework that has been developed for all Western Australian students. Teaching is guided by the way students learn and teaching styles will vary to cater for individual differences and for the achievement levels of the students. Learning technologies are provided as tools for students to assist them with learning in a modern environment where they have ready access to computers and the Internet.

Homework
Homework is any school-related work done at home. It may consist of projects and assignments, learning, completing work started in class, revision for tests, reviewing work, reading and general organisation of files. Evidence suggests students who complete homework regularly perform better in the classroom.

Years 8 to 10
Studies and courses in Years 8 to 10 enable the students to develop their academic strengths and interests. Students gradually move from studying a general course in Year 8, that provides them with experience in all learning areas, to more specialised courses which they have chosen. The school has excellent facilities and courses are available to students in English, mathematics, science, social studies, languages other than English (including French and Japanese), physical and health education, the performing and visual arts, design and technology, home economics, business education and information technology.

Years 11 and 12
The Western Australian Certificate of Education is awarded to Year 12 students who successfully complete the requirements for secondary graduation in Western Australia. Students who study tertiary-entrance-scoring subjects may sit for the Tertiary Entrance Examinations at the end of Year 12.

In Years 11 and 12 students study courses selected from those that are accredited by the Curriculum Council of Western Australia. Leeming Senior High School offers a wide range of tertiary-entrance-scoring subjects and a comprehensive variety of other subjects (Senior School Course Directory)

The curriculum enables students to take programs that lead to:

  • University
  • Technical and Further Education (TAFE)
  • The Academy of Performing Arts
  • The defence academies
  • The computing industry
  • Employment

The school is a participant in the Commonwealth Vocational and Educational Training (VET) program and students have the opportunity to undertake courses accredited in this program.
