absent from school, please contact the schooloffice by telephoning 93101300 before 9.00 a.m.The student should bring a note or doctor \'s certificate to the tutor group teacheron return to school. Appointments for Student Services Many students make appointments to see members of the Student Services Team . The procedure is simple. The student needs to go to the student services building, make an appointment time and show the appointment slip to the relevant subject teacher. As a matter of courtesy appointments should be negotiated with the subject teacher to make sure that essential teaching or tests do not clash with the appointment. Canteen The canteen is open for all students at recess and lunch times. Lunch orders are taken before school starts. Illness During the Day Students who are ill during the day should go to see the nurse who will help them. If the student needs to go home the nurse will contact the student’s parent. Lateness Students who are late for school but arrive before 9.00 a.m. must sign in at the Student Services Centre. Students arriving at school after 9.00 a.m., must report to the Administration Office. Leaving School Grounds To go to the dentist, doctor or to another valid appointment the student needs to bring a letter from a parent and show it to a deputy before school. The deputy will write a permission slip, which must be kept and shown to the front office staff before leaving the school grounds. This process of \'signing out \' enables everyone to be aware that the student is leaving the school grounds for a valid reason. To go home for lunch, a student must obtain a lunch pass from the appropriate deputy. Parking Students who ride bicycles must park and lock them into one of the bicycle racks around the school. Student Counsellors, including the Head Boy and Head Girl, provide a liaison between staff and students. Students from Years 9 to 12 are eligible to be Student Counsellors and their peers elect them to the positions. Through the Student Council students are encouraged to explore their leadership potential and develop their leadership abilities. Tutor Groups These are formed for each Year Group. Each tutor group comprises 20-25 students, whose general care is the responsibility of a tutor group teacher who is available to the students to advise and listen to the their concerns. Over the year a warm, supportive relationship develops between teacher and students, and between students. Social Development Social activities are an integral part of the development of the individual. Pride in our school and its ethos is developed through the many and varied social activities organised by the Year Co-ordinators, staff and elected student Counsellors. Some of the more notable events on the school calendar are the Year 12 Ball, the Year 10 Dinner Dance, the end-of-year Physical Education dinner, carnivals and river cruises. Students are encouraged to participate in these events. Senior Student Status As students progress through school they are expected to take more responsibility for their own education. The team comprises of the following: Year Coordinator A Year Coordinator is assigned to each year group and oversees the general well-being of students in that particular year of schooling. Together with a team of tutor teachers, strategies and support programs are developed to meet both general and particular needs and to develop a sense of belonging within the group. Parents are invited to contact the relevant Year Coordinator should they have a general inquiry about the progress of their son or daughter. School Psychologist The School Psychologist \'s role in the school is a varied one. One role is that of an academic program and vocational counsellor. She also works with students who have social, behavioural or learning problems. She works with individual students and, when necessary, their families. Personal counselling is available to students during school time and this can be organised by making an appointment. Careers Counsellor The Careers Counsellor works with students to give guidance in course selection and future career choices. Using a range of computer-based programs, the Careers Counsellor helps students explore their interests and abilities. Work Experience is organised as appropriate. School Chaplain The School Chaplain is a member of the pastoral care team responsible for the general care of students. She is available to counsel students, staff and parents. Special consideration is given to new students in transition and to others as the need arises. Parents may find support in the Parent Effectiveness classes, usually run in second or third term. The Chaplain encourages the promotion of values. She may do this by invitation into classrooms, by speaking at assemblies or by running the 40-Hour Famine or advertising similar causes. The Chaplain serves as a link between the school community and the local Christian churches by promoting the school to the churches and by advising the students of various youth groups and activities. The members of the churches make a positive contribution to the life of the school through their support of the Chaplain. The salary of the Chaplain is provided through the Churches Commission on Education which is supported by the local churches, the school and the school \'s P and C Association. The Chaplain aims to create an environment where students feel safe to explore their own spirituality. Community Nurse A Community Nurse has a full-time position at the school. She provides a service of first aid and health related counselling. The main focus of the nurse’s role is to foster self-responsibility so that students can begin to take control over and for their own health. Other aspects of the nurse’s role involve monitoring those students with chronic illness, acting as a resource person for health education and encouraging health promotion within the school. New students are provided with a health record card to be completed by parents and returned to the nurse. This provides the nurse with information on any health problems. It also provides contact phone numbers which can be used in the event of a student becoming sick or injured whilst at school and requiring transport home or further medical care. Arrangements can be made with the nurse to administer regular medication if this is deemed to be appropriate. Students self administering their own medication during the school day should bring to school only their daily requirements. With supportive parents the staff at Leeming Education Support Centre (ESC) have developed learning activities that have made life at school such a positive experience for our special needs students. The Curriculum Framework and Overarching Learning Outcomes have been used by staff to develop an Integrated Curriculum to meet the needs of our students. The Focus Areas of our Curriculum are: • Independent Living, • Leisure and Recreation and • Career Education. Each semester parents meet with teachers to develop an Individual Education Plan that is outcomes orientated. These outcomes relate to skills that are needed in life, in work and in leisure. In addition, Leeming Senior High School teachers have been innovative in adapting their teaching to provide worthwhile learning activities for our students. Bob Meenan Our Vision Leeming ESC is committed to developing in each student the ability to function as independently as possible in school, in the community, in the home and in the workplace. Honesty and integrity, self respect and respect for others, and personal responsibility are some of the values that underpin Leeming ESC and are supported and articulated in the Curriculum Framework document. In accord with Leeming Senior High School our motto is ‘Harmony and Excellence’. School Profile Leeming ESC is located on the campus of Leeming Senior High School. Leeming is an attractive residential suburb about 17km south of Perth CBD, in Western Australia. The campus occupies a large site with extensive playing fields together with access to a well-resourced Community Recreation Centre. The buildings are all single storey and all rooms are wheelchair accessible. Currently the ESC occupies three teaching areas in three separate locations. Students have access to all facilities on the campus including the library, science laboratories, technology workshops, computer rooms, home economic facilities and sports facilities. Students are drawn from a wide area within the Cities of Melville, Cockburn and Canning. All students have been ascertained by Department of Education and Training Student Services (Educational Psychology) as having a significant degree of special needs. The majority of students are intellectually disabled. Students enrolled are from a diverse socio-economic and cultural background. In total our students have come from nineteen different schools. At present five buses bring students to the school. Some parents have opted to transport their child to school. Leeming Senior High School (SHS) opened in 1985 and Leeming ESC opened in 1996. Previously two ES units enrolled students with special needs. Enrolments have increased steadily to forty students. The majority of students are now of post-compulsory school age. Teaching staff Most teachers at Leeming ESC have over twenty years experience in a variety of educational settings. All teachers have qualifications in Special Education at fourth year Bachelor of Education level. Two teachers are currently undertaking post-graduate study and three teachers have a Master of Education degree. In 2004, 40% of the teaching staff is new to the school. Non-teaching staff General staff include a Registrar, a social trainer and seven Education Assistants. Regular professional development is provided primarily through our School Development Days. All non-teaching staff have had many years experience of working with a range of students with special needs. Most staff has completed TAFE or Edith Cowan University Teacher Assistant courses. In addition some staff have a Social Trainers certificate and enrolled nurse qualification. Programs Education Support Our students have Individual Education Plans (Year 8 – 10) and Individual Transition Plans (Year 11 – 12) that are designed by their homeroom teacher in consultation with parents. The IEPs / ITPs are based on the three Focus Areas of Leeming ESCs integrated curriculum viz. Leisure and Recreation, Career Education and Independent Living. Staff are committed to providing quality learning opportunities that will help our students achieve the Overarching Learning Outcomes of the Curriculum Framework. Notable aspects of our program in 2003 – 2004 are: • Community Base Learning • Transport Training • TAFE partnership (Certificate 1 in Work Education and Certificate 11 in Business) • Structured Workplace Learning (Enclaves, Business Services and open employment) • School Based Enterprise Studies (recycling, herb growing, bulk mail) In class learning continue in the areas of functional reading and functional maths (particularly money skills). Teaching and learning is directed towards providing opportunities for the generalisation and maintenance of skills learnt in the classroom. Additional Learning Opportunities Leeming SHS specialist teachers teach Leeming ESC students for about 25% of their time at school. Programs are provided in the learning areas of Art, Business Education, Design and Technology, French, Home Economics, Physical Education and Science. Generally these programs are taught in discrete and small education support groups in parallel to the Leeming SHS programs. Leeming SHS teachers have modified their teaching to meet the needs of our students with a particular emphasis on skills needed when they leave school. New Initiatives and Recent Highlights Staffs continue to be innovative in developing programs that will prepare our students for life after school. The following are examples of some recent initiatives and highlights: • Participation in Edith Cowan University Pre Service Education Program (our students’ involvement was detailed by Dr Chris Forlin in the International Journal of Learning Vol 10, 2003). • Leeming Environmental Enterprises. • Student attendance at TAFE Leederville. • People 1st Program ‘Be Cool, Be Safe’–supporting students in self-esteem, human relationships, protective behaviours and sexuality. • Camp Mornington challenge week. • Kalgoorlie Camp by train. • Greenhouse project. • Establishment of work enclaves (Aged Care, Meals on Wheels, Crazy Clarks. Anglicare). • School Based Traineeships in collaboration with Edge Employment and Swan TAFE. • Point Walter recreation program. • Girls Business in collaboration with Leeming SHS school nurse. • Graduation ceremony at EFYC. • APACE gardening. • Visits to factories (Peters and Coca Cola) Post-School Destinations During the year Post School Options (a joint Commonwealth and State initiative for school leavers with disabilities) provide a forum at Leeming ESC to discuss pathways to the future. Subsequently interviews are conducted with school staff, the students and parents to discuss possible options. In 2003 six students graduated from year 12. Five students gained work at a Business Service Agency (Activ and Good Samaritan Industries) and one student has started a painting apprenticeship and attends TAFE part time. Reading for Life introduces students to a wide variety of novels and encourages reading for enjoyment Displays and the promotion of resources and student work. The Library has several display areas which are used to promote resources that are supportive of the curriculums offered throughout the school. Recreational resources are also promoted regularly. Student work is always very popular when displayed in the Library - ranging from written assignments from all subjects, posters promoting Travel and Tourism, Art from all years to furniture from woodwork. New resources are displayed on a weekly basis to allow staff and students to become aware of and borrow new purchases. Information Process All year 8 students participate in orientation sessions at the beginning of term one with a general introduction to the Library procedures, resources and Information Process. This year, formal lessons on the Information Process are being taught to all Year 8 students through their S & E class. All students then learn Information Skills at the point of need with the Teacher Librarians who work collaboratively with subject teachers. Skills that are reinforced cross curricular include various research skills, skimming and scanning, note making techniques, writing bibliographies. These strategies are all supportive of the Curriculum Framework. There are several different strategy sheets available at the Circulation Desk for students to use. All students are familiar with these frameworks and use them at the relevant time. The majority of classes that use the Library are given an introduction by a Teacher Librarian to the topic they are researching - brainstorming with the students how to best retrieve relevant information. In special circumstances some students will be exempted from attendance at school, but only The Minister of Education or his/her delegate can give exemption. Young people beyond the compulsory school age may enrol at this school to complete their secondary schooling provided they agree to abide by the school \'s policies, procedures and practices. It is important for students to attend school at all times and to be punctual in their attendance. Research shows that this will enhance learning. Frequently, students who have high rates of absenteeism and poor punctuality are also the students who underachieve. Absences from School The law requires students to attend school unless they are too ill to attend or they have to attend to family business, which cannot be conducted during out-of-school hours. The parents/guardians of a student who is absent from school should telephone the school as early in the day as possible to tell the school that the student will be absent and for how many days the student is likely to be absent, and, write an explanation for the absence and send it to the student \'s tutor group teacher on the day the student returns to school. The explanation must include the student \'s name, the day and the reason for the absence. Where applicable, medical certificates should be attached to the note. When sickness is the reason for the absence the school may request that a medical certificate be provided to support the claim. Unsatisfactory attendance will be referred to the School Welfare Officer. Punctuality The school does not rely on bells or sirens to indicate the beginning and end of the timetabled periods. This places on students the onus of arriving punctually at school and class. Students should arrive at school in sufficient time to place lunch orders at the canteen (if necessary), to organise their books and equipment and to complete other activities before arriving at the classrooms prior to 8.30 a.m. Students are expected to move quickly from one class to the next between periods. home || profile || programs || people || places || policies || email || sitemap || intranet || search",22);arrFiles[20]=new Array(21,"policies/behave.html","2004-11-22","Leeming Senior High School : POLICIES","","","Code of Conduct || Drug Education || Anti-Bullying Behaviour management Discipline It is expected that all members of the school community will: be treated with respect, dignity and consideration; work and learn without interference; work in a quiet, orderly and safe environment; feel proud of their school. Firm and consistent application of these principles form the basis of the discipline policy. Managing Student Behaviour program The Managing Student Behaviour program is a whole-school approach to student discipline. It is based on students accepting responsibility for their own behaviour and acknowledging the rights of other people. All students are made aware of their rights and responsibilities. Teachers will manage students in their classrooms in a firm, fair and consistent manner. If a student persists with disruptive behaviour that interferes with the rights of other students the student will be withdrawn from class. The teacher will re-admit the student when satisfied that the student is sincere about trying to change his/her behaviour. The student will complete a form showing the modifications that he/she will make to his/her behaviour. It will be posted to parents so they are fully aware of what is happening at school. When a student seriously breaches the school \'s code of conduct or rules the student may be suspended from school, rather than be placed in a withdrawal area. When a student is suspended from school the student loses all privileges associated with attending school. The student is not permitted to come onto school grounds or into any area normally used by the school. For this reason it places great importance on the establishment and maintenance of effective channels of communication with parents and the wider community. Parent Involvement The school welcomes the opportunity to communicate with parents. This may be achieved in a number of ways: Daily Notices Assemblies School Calendar Newsletters Student diary Contact with Teachers Parent & Teacher Evenings Phone Calls Personal Interviews Specific Purpose Notices Publications Local Media Reports Messages to Students Maintenance of Information Daily Notices Each day information for students is provided in the daily notices. Sporting team notices, TAG events, Year Assemblies are just some of the events regularly included in the daily notices. Assemblies Whole-school assemblies are held once a term in the gymnasium. Parents are welcome. The dates for the assemblies are published on the school calendar. Currently, LSHS has a total student enrolment of 1166 (including 45 Education Support Students), who are supported by 114 dedicated and highly professional staff. With its multicultural population, our truly comprehensive program encompasses all the complexities of society. From programs for students with intellectual or physical disabilities to students with the highest Tertiary Entrance Score in the state, from winners of the Australian Computer Skills Competition to students participating in Community Based Learning programs, LSHS provides opportunities for all students to excel. The Adelaide Declaration states that, “ Schooling should develop fully the talents and capacities of all students”, and we do. No other school in WA offers such a wide range of programs and no other school in the State has students who have excelled in such a wide variety of fields. Leeming SHS takes great pride in its motto of Harmony and Excellence and it is in the context of these long held values that the school presents its submission. HARMONY LSHS students, reflecting the diversity of Australia ’s population, come from many cultures, lifestyles and value systems. As a result we have embraced the Adelaide Declaration goal that “ Schooling should be socially just ,” and have created a workplace and learning environment that are free of discrimination arising from students’ background. We celebrate the diversity of our student population and applaud the harmonious way we are able to work together. It is no wonder that so many students, wanting to develop the ‘skills and values for a productive and rewarding life in a just and open society’ are prepared to travel up to three hours per day to attend LSHS rather than go to their local school. Flexibility and adaptability The curriculum offered by LSHS has been adapted to meet the particular needs of different students and is responsive to social and technological changes. Examples of such programs include: the Academic Extension Program (AEP), a Vocational Education and Training program which is integrated into our existing curriculum, the Science Academy which is run in conjunction with Murdoch University , the Accounting Experience Program which is conducted in conjunction with Curtin University , and specialist programs for Education Support students. Not only do students from LSHS participate in university and TAFE courses and achieve, on average, higher grades than full time tertiary students, but students from many primary schools attend LSHS for extension programs in the humanities, as well as mathematics and science. The school also provides individual identification, intervention and support services for our students, including individual education plans, comprehensive career guidance and support services for students at educational risk. LSHS is widely recognised for its excellent programs, innovative teachers and the exceptional educational outcomes of its students. LSHS is recognised in the local and wider community as a harmonious school that excels in the social, academic and physical education of its students. At LSHS we understand and acknowledge the value of cultural diversity and cater for this in the responsive nature of our education offerings. Physical and emotional development The principle aim of health and physical education programs at LSHS is to encourage students to participate in activities which assist in developing a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically, as well as providing opportunities for students to reach the highest level of competition, be it the Olympic Games 2004 or playing in an AFL team. The major focus of our program, however, is the development of the ‘holistic’ student rather than a sole focus on elite sporting achievement. In terms of harmony, LSHS encourages the participation of all students in sporting activities and offers a great variety of sporting programs, during and after school. To this end, LSHS has the distinction of fielding teams in more sports than any other SHS in WA. In addition, carnivals are held in each year level and all students are encouraged to participate irrespective of their athletic ability. LSHS would be unique in holding sports carnivals where, for example, mentally and physically handicapped students can participate alongside elite athletes in a harmonious and supportive environment. ‘Having a go’ is as important on these days as participating at the elite level. Social responsibility and care The school has developed a detailed program focusing on respect and concern for others, developing self confidence and a search for constructive ways of managing conflict. Our Year 11 and 12 students act as mentors for incoming pupils, provide support for those experiencing reading difficulties and also volunteer to coach primary school sports teams outside of school hours. In addition, LSHS students have participated and achieved outstanding results in areas such as UN Youth Conventions, Sir Charles Court Leadership programs, Youth CHOGM, and Student Council Leadership programs. Many students have been selected to attend national activities or to lead future projects. A student from LSHS was the inaugural winner of the Youth Minister Positive Image Award for her work in the school and community. The school has received numerous acknowledgements for the professional way its students conduct themselves at such programs. Our student volunteer program, Reaching Out , has been recognised by Volunteer WA as being of outstanding value and is now the model for many other WA Government and Private schools. Over 80 LSH students work in the community each year. LSHS prides itself on treating all individuals with care. Our relationships are based on trust, mutual respect and acceptance of responsibility. Citizenship - Local and global LSHS students have a long and distinguished history of community participation, cooperation and reconciliation, management of the environment and respect for our cultural heritage. Examples of outstanding programs in the school that demonstrate our commitment and concern to local, national and international issues include our World Vision sponsored child, and our fundraising for many worthy causes; Jeans for Genes Day, Red Nose Day, Daffodil Day, and the Red Cross are just a few of the activities students participate in. Our students are active participants and support our vision of harmony in a global context. This ethos is further enhanced with LSHS achieving state and national acclaim in the Discovering Democracy Project. LSHS students are recognised as being active and responsible citizens both in the context of the school and the wider community. In addition our educational exchange program with Japanese and Reunion Island schools are feted as being the best in the state. This exchange program is envied by many other schools and has been the basis for developing their own models. Again LSHS is at the forefront of educational leadership in WA. Tolerance Over the past 19 years, LSHS has had a distinguished history of creating a school environment that has welcomed all, regardless of background. Our school population contains students from all parts of the world, with a myriad of educational needs and physical and intellectual abilities. LSHS has developed an inclusive educational/social environment that recognises and values social and cultural diversity. We celebrate and embrace our multicultural heritage with a multitude of innovative and exciting programs culminating in our harmony day celebrations. In today’s society tolerance and acceptance of others is sometimes lacking in the general population. LSHS staff and students have long demonstrated that each person has basic rights regardless of race, gender, ability or nationality and have been acknowledged by political and educational leaders in the state for such qualities. The focus on tolerance, compassion and care at LSHS, for example, contributed to one of our students winning a World Vision Study Tour to Africa . Others have successfully applied for exchange programs to Norway , Germany , Venezuela and other countries. EXCELLENCE From its establishment, LSHS has had an outstanding record of facilitating students in their achievement of personal best regardless of their area of strength and skill. We truly believe that a child needs to be nourished and developed holistically and that their talent and individuality should be embraced and celebrated. Over the last 19 years this philosophy has been consistently demonstrated and the high regard in which the community holds the school attests to our high standards in all areas. Academic Excellence. An ethos of excellence exists at LSHS. Excellence can be achieved in a myriad of forms and academic excellence is one area actively promoted at LSHS. Whether in the form of consistently outstanding results in Tertiary Entrance (TEE) subjects and Wholly School Assessed (WSA) subjects or through persistently highly placed results in state and national competitions students are supported in their quest for achievement. This is illustrated by the fact that in 2003 one of our students received the highest TEE result possible in the state. In addition LSHS students have received numerous subject exhibition awards and distinction certificates over the school’s history. LSHS Students consistently perform above the state average in both TEE and WSA courses. In 2003 LSHS was ranked, for many subjects, in the top ten schools in WA on the basis of ‘A’ grades achieved by our students. This environment of academic excellence permeates throughout the whole school from AEP programs to modified programs for Educational Support students. Students at LSHS undertake programs of study that enable them to demonstrate achievement and excellence regardless of their ability. The reputation of the school is such that parents from overseas and interstate have taken up residency locally in order to enrol their special needs child here. Students from LSHS have either won or been ranked in the top three in numerous state and national competitions such as the ASX Stock Market Challenge, Oral History Competition, Have Sum Fun Competition, Titration Stakes Chemistry Competition, West Pac Maths Competition and Solar Car Model competition. A media release published by the University of NSW lauded the high level of literacy skills demonstrated LSHS students when they participated in the recent Australasian Schools English Competition. In addition, students from LSHS have also been successful in receiving a variety of prestigious scholarships at tertiary institutions such as the Curtin University ’s Seizan Fukami Scholarship. Excellence is demonstrated not only amongst students but also in the school’s staff. LSHS staff are all dedicated, enthusiastic professionals with over 50% of the staff accredited as Advanced Skilled Teachers and a number nominated, and winning, district, state or national Excellence in Teaching awards. These professionals provide innovative and motivating pedagogy that engage students. Sporting Excellence Since its inception, LSHS has excelled in providing students with the opportunities and challenges to excel in their chosen sport. These range from golf, to girls and boys football, racquet sports, athletics, soccer, basketball to name a few. Success has been constant and ongoing with students moving from LSHS to elite levels of competition. Examples of these include Lara Carroll (Olympic swimmer) John Hay (AFL Football) Craig Deans (Perth Glory) Liam Rush (Perth Wildcats) Kyle Chamberlain (WA Netball), Garth Tander (Winner of Bathurst 500). Our interschool teams have consistently scored success in a wide variety of sporting fields. Examples include volleyball champions, baseball champions, state football champions, table tennis champions, girls Tennis champions and athletics champions in a variety of divisions. In the time that LSHS has been a Year 12 school we have won a State School sporting title each and every year. Given the large number of schools in WA this is outstanding. Performing and Visual Arts LSHS is renowned within both its community and the state for the outstanding programs it offers in the area of the Arts. We are unique amongst WA schools in that the Arts curriculum places equal emphasis on fostering student achievement in all areas of the arts, drama, dance, music, media and design. In recent times our students have toured their successful music, drama and dance productions. In 2003, for example, the music students performed in Canberra and Sydney and, in 2002, our production of ‘Beijing Spring’ toured Melbourne . Many of our students have achieved national recognition in their chosen art. Jebadiah , a POP group, was formed by a group of LSHS students while still at school. They have since received nation wide acclaim. A significant number of our art students have auditioned and been accepted into the prestigious NIDA and WAAPA programs in a variety of courses including stage management, performance and music. Shane Collard, an ex LSHS student, has been accepted to perform at the Moulin Rouge in Paris . CONCLUSION Excellence in education may be measured in a variety of ways. One such way is to look at student achievement in a variety of fields but especially in the academic area. Excellence may also be measured in the provision schools make to cater for a multicultural student population and their diverse abilities and interests. LSHS has demonstrated that students can work in harmony while excelling academically, physically and socially. At LSHS the harmony and excellence is not something to aspire to, it is a reality. Immunisation No immunisations take place in the high school health centre. A photocopy of the student’s immunisation should be attached to the health record card where possible. A Measles School Exclusion policy exists which states that if a child is not immunised against measles and if a case occurs, then the non-immunised child can be excluded from school for 14 days unless immunised within 72 hours of contact with the patient. Currently, measles, mumps and rubella immunisation (MMR) is recommended at twelve months and four years of age. Adult diphtheria and tetanus immunisation (ADT) is recommended between the ages of 10 and 16 years and is currently offered in Primary School during Year 7. Hepatitis B vaccine is currently offered at no cost to all children aged twelve years through an immunisation clinic or by a medical practitioner where a fee may be charged for the appointment. Accident Insurance The school recommends that students be covered by a 24-hour Personal Accident Insurance policy that is provided by a number of companies. We feel it is very important for students to feel comfortable in their learning environment as this provides the basis for a successful high school career. Great consideration is given to the needs of the students when they enroll in Year Eight and everything possible is done to ensure their own personal skills and talents are respected and developed. In order to make this happen there are several strategies we have implemented. We invite primary school students as early as Years Five and Six to the school to participate in lessons that give them a taste for all that high school has to offer. It has proven to be a very positive experience for all concerned and provides the students with a sense of direction. It is also a lot of fun! We encourage open communication between our teachers and those teachers in the local primary schools. Visits between schools are conducted to ensure that high school teachers are aware of prior learning and can program accordingly. Our SAER (Student at Educational Risk) coordinator and Year Eight coordinator visit schools to discuss the individual requirements of each students and ensure that their teachers in Year Eight are aware of their educational requirements but also their achievements. Parents of Year Sevens are invited to the school for orientation days and parent information evenings to ensure they are aware of the procedures within the school and the staff and facilities available. At the end of the school year all the students enrolled at Leeming are invited to the school for an orientation day when they are shown around the school, made aware of the people and places who will be important in their school routine and generally enjoy a fun day full of variety. It is important that students attend this day as important information will be given and it really does put the students at ease with the forthcoming school year. Leeming Senior High School prides itself on providing a transition program that is both useful and rewarding for the students approaching high school and will continue to place great importance on this transition process as part of the school \'s policy.
